General Officer Commanding (GOC) of 15 Corps, Lieutenant General Subrata Saha on Saturday stated that 'extra security measures' have been taken in preparation for US President Barack Obama's three-day visit to India.

"We have enhanced security measures every year for Republic Day and because a very high level visit is taking place, naturally, all precautions are being taken in terms of intensified patrolling, surveillance, keeping sensitive areas under 'extra care' and so on," Lt. Gen. Saha told the media.

LT. Gen. Saha also welcomed the banning of the Jamaat-ud Dawa (JuD) and the Haqqani network by Pakistan, adding that Indian forces are waiting to see how the order is implemented.

"The banning of the JuD and Haqqani network by Pakistan] is certainly an important announcement. We have to wait and see how the announcement manifests itself on the ground and how it is implemented. Quite clearly, it is engaging our attention and we are monitoring the situation," he stated. Security has also been stepped up along the International Border between India and Pakistan and in New Delhi in anticipation of President Obama's visit.

President Obama, who will arrive in the national capital on January 25 to take part in this year's Republic Day celebrations on the invitation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, will be the first U.S. president to attend the Republic Day celebrations. Obama, who visited India in 2010, will also be the first U.S. president to visit the country twice while in office.
