Maharashtra Governor Vidyasagar Rao on Friday appointed former Supreme Court judge Justice BN Srikrishna as chairman of the search committee for selecting the vice-chancellor of Mumbai University. Additional chief secretary (home) KP Bakshi will be the state government's nominee, while the management and academic council of the university will be represented by Satish Wate, director, National Environmental and Engineering Research Institute, Nagpur, on the search committee.

The five-year term of current VC Rajan Welukar ends on July 6. Welukar's tenure was marked by controversies and litigations. Former pro-vice chancellor AD Sawant and social worker Nitin Deshpande had filed a PIL against Welukar's appointment on the grounds that he was not eligible for the post. Now, the search committee is set to be formed as per the directions of the Bombay High Court, to find out the eligibility of Welukar.

Vidyasagar Rao had on February 19 directed Welukar to abstain from attending office. The Governor's contention was that it would be wrong for him to continue in office since there was a probe against his eligibility.
