Politics in Jammu and Kashmir hit a new low after senior BJP leader and former Forest Minister Choudhary Lal Singh's younger brother Choudhary Rajinder Singh was caught on camera using abuses and invectives against chief minister Mehbooba Mufti in a bid to shore up support at a rally on Sunday.

Police has registered a case of insulting the modesty of women under Section 509 Ranbir Penal Code and 66 of Information Technology Act against Singh.

Leading a rally from Lakhanpur to Hiranagar, Singh was demanding a CBI probe into the Kathua rape and murder case when he used derogatory language against CM Mufti all while his supporters carrying tricolours were cheering and jeering.

Superintendent of Police, Shridhar Patil said, "Obviously, he can be arrested and his arrest is likely."

The incident has sparked massive uproar and outrage, cutting across ideological lines. Main opposition National Conference (NC) has also demanded FIR against the leader.

"This is absolutely unacceptable language used against Mehbooba Mufti and is unequivocally condemned with the request that Jammu and Kashmir police file a FIR against this abusive individual", tweeted Omar Abdullah, former chief minister and NC working president.

Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), too, reacted angrily to Singh's diatribe and called it "frustration by communal fanatics and thugs".

Facing flak, the BJP distanced itself from Singh and said, "Law should take its course. He is neither our leader nor do we recognise him. Had Lal Singh said anything then it would have been a matter of concern for us. Let action be taken against this individual; we are not concerned," said Sunil Sethi, chief spokesman of BJP.
