Former Indian Kabaddi Captain and Arjuna Awardee Dinesh Kumar Bhardwaj is all set to make his mark in an entirely another arena -- the city politics. With an aim to promote sports culture in the Capital, he is trying his level best to gather support from the public.

Bhardwaj won the Arjuna award in 2010. He had been playing Kabaddi since he was a child. He has also been honoured with the Rajiv Gandhi award.

Contesting from the Narela constituency for Congress, his main agenda is to change the scenario of sports in the national Capital. “There are hardly any facilities for sports in the Capital’s smaller constituencies. Many times, talented people do not get proper facilities to pursue their goals. I want a proper sports ground in our area first. Then, we can extend these facilities in other areas,” the 36-year-old said.

Fighting an election for the first time, Bhardwaj is hopeful of a win. “People are fed up with the existing councillor and they want a change. Wherever I go, they raise issues such as lack of sanitation and poor facilities for sports. I want to encourage the residents to participate more in outdoor activities,” he said.

The Grand Old Party has given tickets to many first-timers this year. Before entering politics, Bhardwaj was working with the Bhagat Singh Academy. “I have two children and I will request both of them to follow my league only,” he said.
