The condition of former West Bengal chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee is stable, a Woodlands Hospital bulletin said on Monday, after sources confirmed that the veteran politician will be discharged from the hospital today

"With reference to the admission of Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, he is currently sleeping comfortably with BiPAP (Bilevel Positive Airway Pressure). He is maintaining stable blood pressure, normal heart rate and oxygen saturation with oxygen supplementation," it said.

"His pneumonia is resolving and he will be needing few more days of intravenous antibiotics and supportive care including BiPAP, oxygen support, nebulisation and chest physiotherapy," the bulletin added.

Earlier today it was reported that Bhattacharjee, 75, had been adamant on returning to his residence despite the doctors at Woodlands advising him against doing so. According to sources, a team of doctors catering to the former CM's medical needs had suggested he remained under observation at the hospital for at least three more days. However, Bhattacharjee had decidedly rejected the proposal and the medical practitioners had to eventually agree to discharge him today.

However, it has been decided that the former Chief Minister will be accompanied by a doctor and a nurse at his home. The paperwork for the discharge procedure has been initiated and is being overseen Sujon Chakraborty, Muhammad Selim and other CPI(M) leaders. The cost of medical treatments is being borne by the party fund.

According to sources, Bhattacharjee said all the media attention and unwanted visitors that he has been receiving while being admitted at the hospital made him uncomfortable, to avoid which he would immediately like to return home. He will also not be transported to his residence in an ambulance, according to his wishes. A bulletproof car has been organised for this purpose.

Bhattacharjee was admitted to the hospital on September 6.

He served as a chief minister of West Bengal from 2000 to 2011.
