Decks have been cleared to replace the ballot papers with Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) in the forthcoming elections to the Municipal Corporations in Jammu and Kashmir scheduled in September-October this year.

State Administrative Council (SAC), which met here under the chairmanship of Governor NN Vohra approved “The Jammu and Kashmir Municipal Corporations (Amendment) Bill, 2018," facilitating the conduct of forthcoming elections to the Municipal Corporations through EVMs.

A provision made in this regard in 2016 had lapsed. “Presently, elections to Municipal Corporations are conducted using ballot papers under the provisions of J&K Municipal Corporation Act, 2000.  In order to conduct these elections through EVMs, certain amendments were required to be made in the Act, so as to provide for making rules for use of EVMs in these elections,” said an official spokesman.

With the amendment, the forthcoming Urban Local Body elections scheduled to be held in September-October, will be conducted using the EVMs.

Last municipal polls in Jammu and Kashmir were held in 2005 for the term of five years term. There are 47 Municipal Council/Committees in Kashmir division and 37 in Jammu division. Municipal Corporation of Srinagar has 73 wards while as Municipal Corporation of Jammu consists of 71 wards. There are three Municipal Councils each in Kashmir and Jammu divisions.
