The day began when Mumbai police commissioner Rakesh Maria visited the Khar police station and grilled Indrani Mukerjea, her driver Shyam Rai and Peter Mukerjea's son Rahul for over several hours.
The sensational Sheena Bora murder case has already become infamous for its family drama, but, on Thursday, it assumed notoriety for its minute-to-minute twists and astounding revelations.
With the investigations already spanning more than five cities, even the Mumbai police seemed rattled by the spectacular revelations. The list of unanswered questions, possible motives behind the murder and who all were involved kept on growing through the day. The net result is that the police are yet to determine the real motive behind the heinous crime.
The day began when Mumbai police commissioner Rakesh Maria visited the Khar police station and grilled Indrani Mukerjea, her driver Shyam Rai and Peter Mukerjea's son Rahul for over several hours.
Rahul told the police that he was introduced to Sheena in a party and that he liked her a lot. He then admitted that he was in a relationship with her for six years and they stayed together in Bandra. Rahul repeated before the police his earlier statement that Sheena had told him that Indrani was her mother. He also told the police that Indrani did not like his relationship with Sheena.
Rahul has reportedly told the police during his questioning that, on April 24, 2012, he had dropped Sheena in Bandra and was aware that she was meeting Indrani. "I dropped her outside a college in Khar and a car was parked there, in which Indrani was sitting. I could not recognise the other person in the car," Rahul reportedly told the police.
He is also believed to have told the police that, on April 26, he received an SMS from Sheena's phone, wherein Sheena said she wanted to break up. "If that is the case, then somebody impersonated her. We are going through the mobile phone records of Rai, Rahul, Indrani and Sanjeev," said an officer privy to the investigation.
Rahul also reportedly told the police that he didn't know where Sheena was between 2012 and 2014 and whenever he asked Indrani about Sheena's whereabouts, he was told that Sheena was abroad.
When Rahul was asked whether he suspected Indrani had killed Sheena, he broke down.
Rai, who was allegedly part of the entire murder conspiracy, reportedly told the police that Indrani, the person in the car (Sanjeev Khanna) and Sheena went to a hotel in Bandra, where they had drinks. "Sheena was a little drowsy when she was in the car. The car was then driven to a secluded place where she was strangulated. Rai also claimed that it was Indrani's idea to burn the body and deface it so that she could not be identified. We are in the process of verifying this information," said the officer.
The police might soon visit the hotel and make inquiries with the hotel staff and would also go through the CCTV data.
