Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday laid the foundation stone of a new Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) in Ramana in his parliamentary constituency of Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh.

The STP is to be built under a hybrid-annuity public-private partnership (PPP) model between Essel Infra, an enterprise of Dr Subhash Chandra-led Essel Group, and UP Jal Nigam as part of the NAMAMI Gange programme. This is the first of two such projects awarded under the programme.

The project will cost about RS 156 crore, and will treat 5 crore litres of sewage daily. It is expected to be complete in 18 months, while the company will get an Operations and Maintenance tenure of 15 years.

“We are proud to be associated with the ‘NAMAMI Gange Programme helmed by Hon’ble Prime Minister. This is an important milestone to achieve the goal of ‘Swachh Bharat’ and cleaning the Holy River Ganga. We are committed to complete the project before the scheduled timeline,” Rohit Modi, CEO, Essel Infra, said.

Essel Infra will lead the consortium for the project, and will undertake the designing, development, finance, and construction work, its effluent disposal pipeline and all associated infrastructure. Currently, the city’s sewage is dumped directly into the river without any treatment.
