A day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi sought the support of the ruling AIADMK Amma faction for his party's presidential candidate Ram Nath Kovind, party Deputy General Secretary TTV Dinakaran and deputy Lok Sabha Speaker M Thambidurai separately met jailed general secretary VK Sasikala in Bengaluru prison on Tuesday to take a formal decision on backing BJP's candidate.

The meeting assumes significance following Dinakaran's assertion on Monday night that Sasikala would take the final decision on supporting the BJP and not Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami. Though the two major factions in the AIDAMK led by Palaniswami and former chief minister O Panneerselvam had conveyed their support to the BJP, the formal announcements were yet to be made.

However, both Thambiduari and Dinakaran denied discussing Presidential polls with Sasikala after meeting with her separately.

"I came here with my family to meet my aunt," Dinakaran said. When asked whether Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government was involved in any political conspiracy against the AIADMK government and himself personally, he said, "In politics, our enemies will try to destabilise our party and the government. It is natural, but we will protect the government."

A senior minister in the Palaniswami government said that Thambidurai called on Sasikala to convey the party's decision to support BJP and also asked her to advice Dinakaran from taking any knee jerk action which would have a severe implication. In fact, Thambidurai had on last Saturday conveyed his party's support to the BJP when he met Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Venkaiah Naidu in New Delhi.

Sources in Dinakaran camp said that they would take a decision based on Palaniswami's response to their demand to allow Dinakaran to function as party deputy general secretary.

Dinakaran who was sidelined by Palaniswami led faction is trying to take control of the ruling AIADMK Amma faction by luring away 32 MLAs from the camp. Dinakaran camp has been insisting that AIADMK Amma faction support would be given to the BJP only if they approached either Sasikala or Dinakaran in this regard. BJP snubbed Dinakaran with Prime Minister calling Palaniswami on Monday seeking his party's support.
