In a bid to improve its image from a ministry that is diluting green laws and allowing development at the cost of environment the union environment ministry is set to increase its social media footprint. The ministry has recently floated tenders to hire a social media agency on a one-year basis to handle its media campaigns for four major topics such as sustainable development, growth and environment protection, development without destruction, poverty eradication and growth.

The ministry has sought "complete social networking management system" that will involve videos and populating social media with initiatives of the ministry. It has asked informed agencies that it has to "create buzz about the ministry's activities and engage citizens too as well as update social media sites and accounts round the clock while analyzing trends."

The ministry's tender also says that the agency has to "ensure that significant posts made by the public on all the ministry's social networking sites are monitored on a real time basis and is brought to the notice to ministry officials on daily basis."

The social media activities of the ministry also have to be put in a e-newsletter twice each month. Compared to other ministries, the union environment ministry's Twitter handle has poor following. While the union railway and HRD ministry have over seven lakh and three lakh followers respectively, the union environment ministry had only 1,278 followers as of Tuesday. In contrast, the union environment ministry Prakash Javadekar has 5.9 lakh followers on Twitter.

"There is a certain perception among the people that our ministry only deals with clearance of projects that leads to environmental destruction. We need to change that perception and showcase the positive aspects of our ministry," a ministry official said on the condition of anonymity. Dna did not get a response from environment minister Prakash Javadekar on the ministry's plans to hire a social media agency.
