In the wake of recent attacks on Kashmiri students in Rajasthan and posters surfacing in Uttar Pradesh asking them to return, Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Friday asked the chief ministers of all the states to ensure the safety of Kashmiri students.

The statement comes a day after a group of students from Mewar University in Rajasthan's Chittorgarh were allegedly assaulted by a group of locals who called them "stone pelters" and held them responsible for attack on CRPF men in Kashmir. According to the students, the locals first asked them their identity and whoever said they were from Kashmir was beaten up. The incident took place when they were out of their hostel to buy groceries.

Singh has asked the Home Secretary to issue an advisory to all the states to ensure safety of students. "Kashmiris are a part of our family. I have asked the HS to immediately issue an advisory to all the states to ensure the safety and security of Kashmiri students," the Home Minister said in a series of tweets on Friday.

He also asked the states to take action against those who target students. "The Kashmiri youth also contribute in the progress of India. Action should be taken by the states against those who target them," he said.

There are nearly 500 Kashmiri students at Mewar University. The students said they have been subjected to such behaviour in the past as well. Last year, some students were attacked at the university over rumours that they cooked beef in their hostel room.

A video clip of some youths assaulting soldiers on their way to poll duty in Kralpora area in central Kashmir's Budgam district had gone viral on social media recently, drawing nationwide outrage.

Police remove banners asking Kashmiris to leave UP

Meerut: After banners calling for boycott of Kashmiris and asking people from the Valley to leave Uttar Pradesh surfaced in the district, police registered an FIR against Amit Jani, the chief of Uttar Pradesh Nav Nirman Sena.

The little-known outfit had put up the banners along the Partapur bypass outside the colleges where Kashmiri students study. Jani said it is only the first step and it will launch a "halla bol" campaign from April 30 to "banish" the Kashmiris who do not leave the state on their own.

SHO of the Partapur police station Dinesh Sharma said the banners have been taken down and an FIR has been registered under relevant IPC sections.
