Engine snag grounds Russian flight in Delhi

A Russian airline flight, carrying more than 300 passengers, made an emergency landing at the Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) here around 6 pm on Saturday. IGIA officials said the Boeing 767 made the emergency landing after its pilots detected a snag in one of its engines.

According to sources in Air Traffic Control, around 5.10 pm, it alerted the Airport Operation Control Centre saying full emergency has been declared for a non-scheduled flight ABG-8772 of Royal Flight airline.

Considering the plane's proximity to the Delhi airport, it was diverted here.

The airport operator, Delhi International Airport Ltd, accordingly arranged fire tenders, ambulances and medical staff to tackle any untoward situation.

"The flight that took off from Phú Quoc in Vietnam and headed towards Yekaterinburg city in Russia, with 344 passengers on board, safely landed on runway 11-29 of the Delhi airport. No emergency situation was reported post landing. All the passengers deboarded the plane and adequate measures were put in place. An engine shutdown was said to be the cause of emergency," an airport official said, adding that Delhi police and CISF were also alerted before the landing.
