Ending speculations, the National Conference announced on Friday that it will contest Legislative Assembly and Parliament elections to defend Article 35 A in the strife-torn state of Jammu and Kashmir.

"J&K National Conference boycott as decided by the working committee was limited to Urban Local Bodies and panchayat polls. It had nothing to do with Assembly or Parliament elections. We will fight to win the forthcoming elections to defend Article 35-A and prevent you from installing people via the back door as you have started doing," tweeted National Conference (NC).

Later, NC chief spokesman Aga Ruhullah Mehdi tweeted Jitendra Singh, minister of state in PMO, to clear the air about the polls.

"You (Singh) want us to leave the ground for you and your proxies, so that you and your proxies can take over the legislature and do away with Articles 370 & 35A through legislation? Not even in your dreams. Enough of your (BJP-RSS) adventures in J&K," he said.

Two days ago, former Chief Minister and NC Vice-President Omar Abdullah had hinted at participating in the Assembly elections even as the BJP favored continuation of governor's rule in the state.

"You got the control of a handful of towns and cities because NC and PDP stayed away (and the Congress did such a poor job of putting up a fight) do you really think we will give you a walkover in the Assembly polls?" tweeted Omar in response to BJP National General Secretary Ram Madhav's gauntlet.

NC and PDP had boycotted civic and panchayat polls over the issue of Article 35 A. In their absence, People's Conference and BJP made hay. Congress too made some gains but failed to capitalise on the absence of the two major parties

Newly elected Srinagar Mayor Junaid Azim Mattu, who resigned from the NC over the election boycott, jumped on to the bandwagon and lampooned at the decision of NC. "Election 1: Boycott to save 35-A! Election 2: Participate to save 35-A! Perplexing logic — the moral, stentorian rhetoric aside. Thankfully, people aren't as gullible as presumed," he tweeted.
