The Supreme Court on Monday directed the Centre to propose a “line of action” to tackle the “serious issue” of farmers’ suicides. “It is a very serious issue and the Centre should deal with the real issues which force them to take the extreme step,” a bench headed by Chief Justice JS Khehar said. It gave the Union government four weeks’ time to file the report.

Additional Solicitor General PS Narasimha submitted that the government is coming up with a comprehensive policy in which it would deal with all the issues which farmers face at the ground level.  “However, implementation should be at the level of states,” he said.
