Employees' union threatens to disrupt Vibrant Gujarat Summit

The Gujarat State Employees' Co-ordination Committee, the apex union body of more than 8 lakh state government employees, threatened to disrupt the forthcoming Vibrant Gujarat Summit if their demands were not met.

To decide future course of action, the union has called a meeting of all their representatives at Gandhinagar on December 8, committee spokesperson R A Patel said here today. "We have been in talks with government representatives since several months. They even gave us a positive indication about fulfilling our demands, but our demands remained unfulfilled. Thus, we are left with no other option. We have called a mass meeting on December 9, to finalise our future course of action," Patel said.

He said all employees would boycott forthcoming Vibrant Gujarat Summit in January 2015 if their demands were not met. Their primary demands include complete implementation of the Sixth Pay Commission, higher pay grade on the lines of central government employees, medical allowance as well as jobs to kin of employees who died during service.

"Earlier too, we announced protests, but we backed down after repeated assurance from the government. Now, it's high time, as none of our demands are met. If the government fails to respond this time, state employees will boycott work related to the Vibrant Gujarat Summit. We will also stage protests during the event if needed," Patel announced.
