A 60-year-old farmer was trampled to death by a stray elephant in his farm at Teethipalayam on the city outskirts on Tuesday. Ramasamy, along with four others, were engaged in maintenance of a electric motor in his farm in the early hours, when an elephant suddenly entered from the forest area, police said.

Seeing the pachyderm, four persons managed to escape, while Ramasamy could not run fast and fell down, resulting in the elephant chasing and trampling him to death, they said. Some forest department officials rushed to the spot and managed to scare the animal away into the forest, by bursting crackers, police added.
