The Election Commission Friday issued show cause notice to Trinamool Congress legislator Srikanto Mahato for describing former West Bengal chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharje and CPI-M leader Mohammad Salim as "murderers".

Mahato, a state lawmaker from Salboni in West Midnapore district, made the comments against the duo at a Lok Sabha election public meeting at Chandrakone Road Wednesday.

He had also allegedly used foul language against Salim.

A complaint was lodged against Mahato for the "objectionable remarks".

"A show cause notice has been issued by Assistant Returning Officer, Jhargram (SC) parliamentary constituency," said the office of the chief electoral officer here.
