Millions of Muslims across the world celebrate Eid al-Adha, one of the two most important festivals of the Muslim calendar on September 1-2. The festival which is also known as the ‘sacrifice feast’ or Greater Eid begins on the 10th day of the holiest month of the Islamic Lunar calendar.

It falls on the 10th day of Dhul Hijjah – September 1 this year and is referred to as ‘big Eid’ and is sometimes overlooked compared to ‘little Eid’ or Eid ul-Fitr.

Also known as Bakri Eid or Bakrid, it honours the willingness of Prophet Abraham to sacrifice his elder son Ismail as an act of submission to God.  On this day, Muslims sacrifice goats, lambs, sheep and camels. Traditionally, one-third of the meet is consumed by family, one-third by friends and the remaining part by those in need.
