An eerie calm has descended on the Line of Control (LoC) in the Uri sector after the guns fell silent on the both sides. Cross LoC peace bus Karawan-e-Aman also plied normally and crossed the Aman Sethu check post in Uri sector without hassles on Monday.

For the last 60 hours there is no report of any ceasefire violation from any area along the LoC in the Uri sector. Authorities are mulling to send back the displaced people after weighing the pros and cons of the ceasefire and firing.

“Guns are silent since almost 60 hours. There is no report of firing from anywhere. It is peaceful so far,” said Dr Sagar D Doifode, Sub Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Uri.

More than seven villages have been affected by the cross border shelling since escalation started on February 19. These include Balkote, Silikote, Tilwari, Churnda, Hatlanga and other neighboring hamlets.

Official figures reveal that around 7,000 people have been affected due to the cross-LoC shelling in the area.

“Nearly 1500 people have been evacuated and of whom 700 are living in camps. We will initiate the process to send them back.  We will take the decision tomorrow after discussing with higher author ties and the armed force whether it is safe to send them back”, said Dr Sagar.

The authorities have also declared three days holiday for the students of Government Higher Secondary School Uri as it has been converted into shelter camp for the displaced people. “This particular school will remain off for three days. They teachers will be asked to take extra classes to compensate the syllabus,” said Dr Sagar.

SDM Uri said the schools in the shelling affected villages will start operating in coming days after the return of the displaced people. “When people will go back, schools will start functioning normally. It is matter of one or two days. Schools will be asked to compensate by taking extra classes,” he said.
