Economic Survey, Union Budget, Triple Talaq Bill and more: What to expect from Parliament's Budget Session 2018

The first leg of the Budget session is set to begin today, January 29. The session will officially begin with the speech of President Ram Nath Kovind to a joint sitting of the two Houses. 

The first phase of the Budget session is scheduled from January 29 to February 9. After a recess, Parliament would meet again from March 5 to April 6. 

The Narendra Modi government will present last full-fledged budget of its term in office on February 1.

 

10 important facts about this Budget session: 

1- Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday sought the cooperation of all political parties to collectively strive to create a constructive atmosphere to achieve national good.

2- Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan also sought the cooperation of all political parties for a constructive Budget Session. 

3- On the first day of the budget session, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley will present the Economic Survey 2018 before the parliament. The survey, prepared by Chief Economic Adviser (CEA) Arvind Subramanian, will give a broad picture of the state of the economy and the way forward.

4- The Finance Minister will present the Union Budget 2018 on February 1. This is the second year of the practice of presenting the budget on the first day of February instead of the last working day of the month. 

 

5- This will be the NDA government's last full-fledged Budget before the country goes to polls in 2019. 

6- Besides, the Economic Survey and the Union Budget, the government will also try to push some important bills in the first phase of the budget session itself. 

7- The government has indicated that it would give a fresh push for passage of the triple talaq bill.

8- The government is also expected to push the bill which seeks to grant constitutional status to the OBC Commission.

9- The Opposition plans to counter the government on issues such as rising incidents of rapes, alleged “attack” on constitutional institutions and the plight of traders.

 

10- The first spell of the session will end on February 9. Parliament will meet again between March 5 and April 6.
