Gearing up for the May 12 All Party Meeting on recent controversies surrounding Electronic Voting Machines (EVM), the Election Commission on Sunday released a detailed Status Paper to facilitate threadbare discussions and deliberations on the alleged issue of rigging and manipulation of EVMs.

Asserting that the Indian EVMs stands as one of the "most credible, non-tamperable and transparent machines", the paper says, "Till date, no one could actually demonstrate that EVMs in possession of EC and used by it, can be tampered with or manipulated. What has been demonstrated or claimed to have been demonstrated is on a privately assembled "look-alike of ECI-EVMs."

The EC also stated, the recent allegations of EVMs yielding votes for only one political party in Bhind (Madhya Pradesh) and Dholpur (Rajasthan) were found baseless after an enquiry.

The State assembly and Lok Sabha elections, the Status Paper gives a detailed overview on how the EVMs are based on a robust technology that cannot be broken into and are administered under tight security that does allow anybody to play a mischief.

The EC said, the Commission firmly believes that the introduction of VVPAT machines with the EVMs in all future elections will bring utmost transparency and credibility in the EVM-based voting system.

EC said it is launching a voter education and awareness programme under its Systematic Voters' Education and Electoral Participation initiative to 'educate, orient and inform' voters about the functioning VVPAT machines.
