The Election Commission (EC) on Wednesday refused to enter into a political blame game with Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) even as the latter again accused the electronic voting machines (EVMs) for its massive drubbing in Delhi's municipal elections thus targeting the poll watchdog once again.

Vouching for the EVMs' robustness, an official asserted that the EC does not want to belittle its constitutional status by giving reply to every allegation.

"AAP should get its facts straight. EC is an autonomous constitutional authority under oath that administers elections to the Lok Sabha, Rajya Sabha, state legislatures, and the offices of the President and Vice President in the country and not municipalities," said the senior official.

"It is true that EC is a quasi-judicial body but it does not have provisions to issue contempt. The courts can take a suo motu action," added the official not ready to be quoted.

Despite being earlier castigated and even hit below the belt by Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, who compared Election Commission with 'Dhritarashtra' (of Mahabharata fame) who would anything for his son 'Duryodhana' (read BJP) after the Punjab debacle, the poll watchdog had kept its restraint and gave a detailed point-by-point rebuttal to the allegations raised by AAP.

Reiterating that the "integrity of electoral process is fully preserved", the EC replied, "It is for your party to introspect as to why your party could not perform as per your expectations and it is unfair on the part of your party to attribute unsatisfactory poll performance of your party to the alleged tamperability of EVMs."

Yet trying to hide another massive defeat after Punjab elections, AAP again targeted the Election Commission by blaming the EVMs for its dismal performance.
