UP Police and intelligence agencies are fervently hunting for a doctor absconding from the eastern UP district of Bahraich. It turns out that the doctor was using his clinic to indoctrinate youngsters into extremism. The doctor is reported to have developed a module of the banned SIMI (Students' Islamic Movement of India), and already recruited about 300 youngsters for this terror outfit from Bahraich, a district on the sensitive Indo-Nepal border, and adjoining areas.

"We are investigating the matter," is all that the Bahraich SP Salik Ram Verma told reporters when questioned on this count, refusing to share any details. Acting district SP Arvind Bhushan Pande said the police were looking for Dr MM Sheikh alias "Malik Baba" and two more people. One of them has been identified as Nizam, a native of Mahsi (Bahraich) where the clinic is located, and the other as an associate from Kanpur whose identity remains under wraps.

According to sources in the UP Police, Dr Sheikh (30), a doctor of Unani medicine hailing from Aligarh, had come to Bahraich about a year ago, and taken a shop on rent for setting up his clinic.

His landlord Mahfooz told the police that for the first three-four months, Sheikh attended to patients regularly, but later his working became erratic, with the clinic often remaining closed without any prior notice. He said Sheikh used to tour the countryside for purposes unknown to him.

Police sources say Sheikh was recruiting youngsters to rejuvenate SIMI in east UP's 'terai' area, a region marked as highly sensitive due to the proximity to the Nepal border and the high concentration of Muslim population.

"He was charging Rs 500 to Rs 1,000 from youngsters as joining fee," a senior official shared with dna, adding that Sheikh may already have recruited about 300 youngsters for his nefarious designs. "It's going to be a tough task identifying the new recruits unless we get hold of Sheikh," he said, with a hint of concern.
