Earthquake shakes Delhi and Uttar Pradesh; PM Narendra Modi reaches out

The India Meteorological Department on Saturday said that the national capital felt a tremor of 5 on the Richter scale, with the epicentre of the earthquake in Nepal. "An earthquake of magnitude 7.5 was observed 77 kilometres North West of the capital of Nepal, Kathmandu. The depth of this earthquake was ten kilometres and the co-ordinates 28.1 and 84.6.," Met Department director general LS Rathore said.

"More intense shocks were observed in Eastern UP, Bihar, sub-Himalayan and Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim. The tremors were also felt in the entire North India including Delhi, Jaipur, Dehradun and so on," he added.

Rathore also said that an aftershock of 6.6 on the Richter scale hit the area.  

Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav in wake of the massive earthquake that shook Nepal and Northern India. The official twitter account of the Prime Minister’s Office shared the information.  The PMO also stated that Prime Minister Modi is trying to reach his Nepali counterpart Sushil Koirala. “PM is trying to reach Nepal PM Shri Sushil Koirala, who is abroad. He has spoken to President of Nepal Shri Ram Baran Yadav,” it stated.

According to reports, the epicentre of the tremors was said to be in Pokhra, Nepal, with the European Mediterranean Seismological Center stating that the earthquake measured 7.4 on the Richter scale.
