EAM Jaishankar on Bangladesh visit; discusses Teesta, officially invites Sheikh Hasina to India

During his meeting with Sheikh Hasina, Jaishankar extended Prime Minister Narendra Modi's invite for India visit in October.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar who is on a 3-day visit to Bangladesh on Tuesday held talks with his Bangladeshi counterpart Md Shahidul Haque in Dhaka in which both sides discussed a number of issues including Teesta water-sharing agreement. 

Jaishankar also called on Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and officially invited her to India. 

After the talks at the State Guest House Jamuna in Dhaka, S Jaishankar said, "there is no change in India's vow to solve the Teesta issue" as quoted by local media.

Mr Jaishankar is on his maiden visit to Bangladesh after taking charge as India's EAM, though he has already met Bangladesh Foreign Minister on the sidelines of the ASEAN grouping meetings earlier this month.

Rohingya issue was also raised during the meet with India assuring its "continued support for safe, speedy and sustainable return of the Rohingyas to Myanmar", according to a readout from Bangladesh foreign office.

India in September 2017 launched Operation Insaniyat to help the refugees who had fled Myanmar and are taking shelter in Bangladesh. The 4th tranche was started in December 2018 in which 2 lac woollen sweaters were given to Rohingya Refugees.

During his meeting with Sheikh Hasina, Jaishankar extended Prime Minister Narendra Modi's invite for India visit in October.

"Visiting Indian External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar handed over the invitation letter of Narendra Modi to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina when he paid a courtesy call on the premier at her official Ganabhaban residence,” he Press Secretary Ihsanul Karim was quoted as saying by the local media. 

Bangladesh PM last visited India in May 2018 for the joint inauguration of Bangladesh Bhavan at Visva Bharati University in West Bengal along with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. 

Her last state visit to India was in 2017 while PM Modi visited Bangladesh in 2015.
