E-commerce will touch Rs 1 lakh cr in 5 years: Ravi Shankar Prasad

With a sustained push by the government, and its digital drive, it is likely that the volume of trade in the e-commerce sector will touch Rs 1,00,000 crore in the coming five years, said Union minister for law, eletronics and IT Ravi Shankar Prasad. Speaking at the 111th Annual Session PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the minister said that the government has already saved over Rs 36,000 crore by digitalising economic activities.

"We have used payment methods like direct cash transfer for payment of subsidies and MGNREGA wages to the accounts of intended beneficiaries through aadhaar. With e-commerce facilities being made available to rural folk, we have successfully transferred wages for several social schemes into their accounts amounting to a savings of Rs 36,000 crore in the last year," said Prasad.

Prasad also said that close to 40 mobile units have come to India to manufacturer mobile devices, and 11 have already been approved. He further added that the digital drive is being extended to postal services, with banks like CitiBank, Deutsche Bank, and Barclays working on setting up payment kiosks in post offices.

While National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) bagged the Good Corporate Citizen Award, the Award for Outstanding Contribution to Social Welfare was taken away by Trident Limited. The Distinguished Entrepreneurship Award went to Narendra Bansal, chairman and managing director of Intex Technologies.

Dr Jyotsna Suri, chairman and managing director of Bharat Hotels bagged the Outstanding Businesswoman Award and the Award for Excellence in Skill Development was conferred upon Jubilant Life Sciences. The Lifetime Achievement Award was given to RK Saboo, chairman of KDDL Ltd.
