Considering the recent unrest in Basirhat and Baduria areas of North 24 Parganas, and Calcutta High Court putting a stay on the state government's decision to prohibit immersion on Muharram, which falls on October 1, the West Bengal government, along with the Border Security Force (BSF), have taken elaborate security measures during the immersion of idols at the ghats of Kalindi and Ichamati rivers on Indo-Bangla border.

The Bangladesh administration and the Border Guards Bangladesh (BGB) have also been roped in and there had been at least two high-level meetings between the officials of West Bengal and Bangladesh.

Nabanna sources said it had been decided that India and Bangladesh would immerse idols on two different dates at Kalindi River at Hingalgunj – Bangladesh on September 30 and West Bengal on October 2. "This decision was taken on Saturday through a meeting of representatives of both West Bengal and Bangladesh," said a Nabanna official.

He also said that at Ichamati River, both Bangladesh and West Bengal would complete immersion of idols on October 30, the day of Dashami. "This was decided at a meeting on September 22, at a meeting at the BSF's Hasnabad camp. Those who attended the meeting included North 24 Parganas Additional District Magistrate, senior police officials of the district, chairman of Taki Municipality and BSF officials. Bangladesh representatives included BGB officials and chairman of Satkhira Municipality," the official said.

It had also been decided to step up on vigilance on Ichamati River during immersion so that there is no illegal crossing over across the water border.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had, in a meeting on September 22, given an instruction that police need to be extra careful during immersion as she had intelligence inputs that there were possibilities of mischief during the festive season.

Following a controversial Facebook post by a 17-year-old on June 30, a communal unrest was sparked off on July 1 in the district and violence spread in this district and paramilitary forces were deployed to bring situation under control.
