In a move that would benefit consumers across the country, the Union Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution has modified the Package Commodity Rules made under the Legal Metrology Act (LMA) to completely stop the practice of dual Maximum Retail Price (MRP) on packaged goods. The rules have also been amended to bring e-commerce companies under the ambit of LMA. A notification in this regard was issued last month and it will come into effect from January next year.

Last year, the Maharashtra Legal Metrology Organisation (LMO) had launched a sustained campaign against the dual MRP system. During this campaign, cases were made out and accordingly notices were issued to all the companies that were involved in such practices.

The LMO's action was challenged by the affected companies at various forums and courts. On the other hand, the LMO was in talks with the Ministry of Consumer Affairs in New Delhi to modify the rules in the LMA. Accordingly, the Ministry had modified the rules and stopped the practice of the dual MRP completely.

That apart, under the new rules, the name of the country of origin or manufacture or assembly in the case of imported goods will have to be mentioned in the packaging. Also, if a package contains a commodity that may become unfit for human consumption after a period of time, the best-before or use-by date, month and year must also be mentioned on the label.
