DU student suffers 70% burns as stalker sets her ablaze

A young woman here suffered 70% burns after she was set ablaze by her jilted lover on Saturday night. The woman – a resident of North-West Delhi’s Bhalaswa Diary area – is in a critical but stable condition at the moment.

According to sources, the accused Abhishek was allegedly stalking her for several months and wanted to marry her. However, the victim did not appreciate his advances and had not accepted his proposal. Family members say that the victim's brother had even warned Abhishek and asked him to stay away from his sister on several occasions.

On Saturday morning, the victim’s brother came across a SMS Abhishek had written to the victim. An argument between the victim’s brother and Abhishek ensued.

Later in the day, the accused, his brother Karan and uncle Vijay and a few others, landed up at the victim’s house in Mukundpur area. A fight between the parties ensued. To save her self, the victim ran to the top floor of her house where Abhishek followed. The enraged lover, then opened a can of kerosene nearby and poured it on the victim, setting her on fire. 

During the attack, the victim’s mother also suffered minor burns as she must have tried to save her daughter, and the trio beat up the victim’s brother, injuring him as well.

The three accused were arrested by the Delhi police and have been charged under the relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). The accused have been charged with 307 (attempt to murder), 452 (trespassing with intent to hurt), 323 (punishment for voluntarily causing hurt) and 34 (Acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) of the IPC.

On Monday, five others were arrested by the Delhi Police. "Two more men were also arrested they are identified as Kanhaiya and Bittu they were also involved in the incident," police said.

“The accused are under custody and we have charged them. However, during the course of the investigation, the charges may change should the victim succumb to her injuries,” said Prashan Priya Gautam, additional commissioner of police (ACP) Jahangir Puri.

The victim is currently pursuing a degree through correspondence from Delhi University and is said to be in her second year. Family members say she is a quiet girl who had few friends and seldom stepped out of the house.

The accused, a milk seller in the locality, lived in the same neighbourhood and the two families allegedly clashed with each other on several occasions on account of his one-sided interest in the victim.

The victim has been admitted in the burns unit at Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Narayan Hospital where she is undergoing her treatment.
