As in the last few years, the University of Mumbai (MU) has failed to feature in the list of top 500 universities across the world in the recently released QS World University Rankings 2018. As per the rankings, which were announced on Thursday morning, MU's overall position fell from 701 in 2017 to 801 in the 2018 rankings. Delhi University secured the 481st rank globally, thus securing a spot in the top 500, which it had missed last year.

While IIT-Bombay jumped 40 places by improving its ranking from 219 last year to 179 this time, MU performed poorly with a drop of a hundred ranks.

The rankings were announced by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), a British agency that ranks higher educational institutions in the world on the basis of six main parameters — academic reputation, employer reputation, faculty/student ratio, citations per faculty, international faculty ratio and international student ratio. The highest weighting (40 per cent) is given to an institution's academic reputation.

While MU has never made it to the list of top 500 in the QS rankings, the fall in the rankings means that it is now listed in the range of 801-1,000 with a score of 39.3 in employer reputation. In April, the university failed to feature in the top 100 universities in the country as per the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) rankings released this year.

Santosh Gangurde, the vice-president of the Maharashtra Navnirman Vidyarthi Sena (MNVS), a student organisation, said that it's high time the university works on its national and international rankings. "The university is losing its credibility by not featuring in the top universities rankings year on year. It is not able to project its existing achievements due to sheer complacency of the staff in collating the data and submitting it to the ranking agencies," Gangurde said.

MA Khan, Registrar, MU, said: "One of the reasons for the low rankings can be that the ranking institute might not have the entire data of placements, research etc. The university's Internal Quality Assesment Cell (IQAC) is working on collating the data from various departments and affiliated colleges which would help us improve the rankings"
