The Shiromani Akali Dal (Badal) registered a thumping victory in the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC) 2017 polls, where they bagged 35 out of 46 seats. The SAD Delhi (Sarna) won 7 seats. The Akaal Sahai Welfare Society bagged two seats and independent candidates got the other two. In total 353, candidates were in the fray. Hailing the victory, SAD president Sukhbir Singh Badal said it was proof of AAP and Congress’ rejection by the Sikh community. He wrote on Twitter: “The overwhelming victory of the SAD in the DSGMC elections is a proof of rejection of both AAP and the Congress amongst the Sikh community. SAD would fulfil all the promises made to the community and the DSGMC will work with even more vigour for the welfare of the people.”

DSGMC President Manjit Singh GK and senior leader Manjinder Singh Sirsa were among the winners. SAD (Delhi) President Paramjit Singh Sarna, who was supported by the Congress was among the big leaders to lose.

Badal also said: "The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) tried its best to prop up its own organisation and formed the Panthic Sewa Dal (PSD) to put up candidates. They even levelled allegations against the SAD. However, the results show that the Delhi Sikh electorate is completely disillusioned with the AAP and its performance.”

Earlier, party MLA Avtar Singh Kalkaji who formed the PSD said that he wasn’t getting enough support from the party.  The DSGMC has an annual budget of Rs 100 crore and manages nine gurudwaras, six colleges and 18 schools among other institutions in the capital.

"The polling was held peacefully last Sunday and the counting ended this evening without any untoward incident. No formal complaint of any irregularity was received by the directorate," said Shoor Bir Singh, the director of the Directorate of Gurudwara Elections, Delhi government.

Around 1,75,543 members of the Sikh community, among 3.8 lakh registered voters, voted to elect the members of the Committee that manages gurudwaras as well as educational and social institutions in the national capital. The Panthak Sewa Dal and the Aam Akali Dal that had fielded 39 and nine candidates, respectively, drew a blank in the election.

The nine co-opted members in the 55-strong DSGMC will be selected within March 16, Singh said. The newly formed committee's meeting will be held in next 15 days after the selection of the co-opt members, to elect the pro-tem chairman who will conduct proceedings for the election of the new chairman of the Committee, he added.
