Drug carrier for a South American Cartel arrested with cocaine worth Rs 6.5 crore

The accused was identified by police as Armando Lopes Reyes and investigators said that the accused had travelled to India thrice in the months of May, July and October last year.

With the arrest of one 64-year-old Peruvian National, the Crime Branch of Delhi police on Wednesday claimed to have busted an international drug trafficking module invoved in the supply of Brazilian manufactured cocaine. The accused was arrested at T3 Terminal of IGI airport and was allegedly in possession of over one kilogram of high-quality cocaine whose estimated worth in the market is close to a whooping Rs 7 crore. Officers of the Crime Branch said the accused, who is now believed to be attached to the notorious South American drug cartel, had skillfully hidden the contraband in the cavities of the pipes and handles of a trolley bag and it was only after a second check that the drugs were unearthed.

"Interrogation of the accused is being done to unearth the whole racket of drugs syndicate being operated from South America and also having its tentacles in Africa, Asia, Europe and North America," said Ravindra Yadav, joint commissioner of police (crime). 

Yadav added that after being held at the airport Reyes was brought to the office of ISC at Chanakyapuri, and one Spanish interpreter was arranged after the accused claimed to not understand English.

"The information was very reliable and hundred percent sure that he was carrying major haul of drugs," Yadav said. The accused, according to Crime Branch officials, had revealed that bags had been given to him by one Juan in Sao Paulo, Brazil to hand over them to one Ali in Delhi. He was given $1,000 by one Juan and another $500 was promised on his return back to Sao Paulo. "The accused was using the highly lucrative route of Brazil-Sao Paulo-Delhi which in the past has been used by the drug traffickers," Yadav said.

"All the concealed packets of both the bags were carefully taken out and small packets having semi solid white material packed in 4 layers of plastic, silver foil, plastic rapper and then black PVC plastic tape to save the consignment from X-Ray detection and other scanners were found. The recovered material was tested and was found to be of the highest purity of cocaine. The total weight of the recovered material came to 1295 gram," said a senior police officer.

Investigators revealed that the accused is a carrier and member of a large South American drug syndicate. a case under appropriate sections of NDPS act was registered and investigations were taken up.

"Efforts are being made to identify his associates in India and abroad. Intelligence agencies and Narcotics Control Bureau have been informed to conduct joint interrogation of the accused," the Crime Branch officers informed dna.
