The Delhi Police have arrested a 'Superchor' no less than the thief in Bollywood flick 'Oye Lucky Lucky Oye'. Kunal started stealing cars to impress girls and later, when he felt that the cops could come calling, he went under the knife to get a new face and evade arrest. As Kunal donned a new look, the police were left groping in the dark.

According to police, when they finally caught Kunal from Nehru place, little did they know he was Tanuj, the thief who had been on their wanted list for auto-lifting. Kunal has been lifting cars since 1997.

"Based on a tip-off, we intercepted an I20 car coming from Moolchand Hospital-side. Seeing police, the driver stopped the car some 50 metres away and tried to flee. The police gave him a chase and caught him," said Romil Baaniya, Deputy Commissioner Of Police (South-East).

During interrogation, Kunal admitted to stealing cars with the help of his accomplice Irshad Ali.

"Kunal said he started with house thefts. At 16, he started stealing cars, mostly to for his girlfriends. Thereafter, he became an expert auto-thief and driving became thrilling," Baaniya added.

Police said Kunal also revealed his true identity. "He disclosed that he had changed his identity from Tanuj to Kunal by undergoing a plastic surgery. Tanuj was involved in more than 50 cases. His intention was to evade police arrest," said a senior police officer.

According to police, Kunal opened fire at police personnel and also tried to commit suicide in the CR Park station lock-up.

The police have also arrested his accomplices Ali and Mohd Shadab from Meerut. Shadab used to change the engine and chassis number of stolen vehicles.

Police said Kunal and his accomplices have stolen more than 150 cars, of which 12 have been recovered.
