Indian Army on Saturday pressed an alarm button calling the dreaded Islamic State (IS) a "live threat", even as the top cop of Jammu and Kashmir had just 12 days ago categorically ruled out the influence of ISIS ideology in the valley.

"The IS is a live threat that cannot be ignored. It is a cause of concern and we are monitoring it… All the security forces and the intelligence agencies are monitoring this. That is all I can say," Lieutenant General Satish Dua, General Officer Commander (GOC) of Army's 15 Corps, told mediapersons in Srinagar on Saturday.

The army commander's statement comes just 12 days after the Jammu and Kashmir director general of police (DGP) K Rajendra Kumar said there was no ISIS ideology in the valley.

"Every case (or raising ISIS flags) is being investigated. We have not seen such (ISIS) ideology in Kashmir," Rajendra told reporters at Kishtwar in Jammu division on November 16.

Lieutenant General Dua's statement comes two days after inspector general of Border Security Force (BSF) Jammu frontier Rakesh Sharma said it is being believed that ISIS can support Pakistani terrorists who are operating on the Line of Control and International Border.

"It is being believed that ISIS can support Pakistani terrorists who are operating on the LOC and IB. Intelligence agencies accept it and there are also inputs. Let us see how things pan out in future", Sharma said.

IG BSF however hastened to add that there are no inputs (about ISIS trying to sneak into the state). "However, we are keeping pace with what is happening in the world. Terrorist can do anything anywhere in the world. We also become vulnerable. We have taken adequate measures. We have sensitized our ground commanders that they should be carefully examining the situation developing in front of them," he said.

Kashmir valley has been witnessing hoisting of ISIS flags and banners by some masked youth particularly in old city after Friday prayers.

Sources said police had picked up several youth since the hoisting of the flags last year, but investigation did not reveal any organizational structure for the ISIS in the valley. Even separatist leaders have openly condemned ISIS and stated that there are no traces of the dreaded outfit in the valley.
