Media baron Dr Subhash Chandra on Tuesday filed his nomination papers as an independent candidate for the second Rajya Sabha seat falling vacant from Haryana.

The biennial elections to the Upper House are scheduled to be held on June 11 and Tuesday was the last date for filing nominations.

Dr Chandra was accompanied by some Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and independent MLAs for filing the papers. Dr Chandra said he had sought support from members of the Haryana assembly, cutting across party lines.

"I have got support from many members. Independent members have given their support. BJP, too, has given its support. I am hopeful that I will get support from other parties as well," he said.

Asked why he chose to file his nomination for Rajya Sabha, Dr Chandra said the people of Haryana needed apt representation in Parliament.

"I was born and brought up in Haryana. With the present dispensation, I feel that there is a vacuum in Haryana and many people in Haryana feel that, and I feel that. It is my belief that the people of Haryana need apt representation in Parliament," he told dna.

"People are also aware that I have been withdrawing myself from doing active business as Generation X takes over. This is a good time for me to get involved in social causes," said Dr Chandra, explaining why he is taking the proverbial plunge into politics.

"I have reached that phase of my life where my top priority is to give back to society. I have been doing motivational shows to try and build youngsters. I don't do that for profit. All I am thinking of now is how to give back to society," Dr Chandra told dna.
