The group were released after submitting a written apology.
In the backdrop of controversy over comments about the Taj Mahal, a dozen youngsters were reportedly detained for chanting the Shiva Chalisa on the premises of the monument.
The youngsters claimed that Taj Mahal was originally a Shiva a temple, and were taken away by CISF personnel, reported Hindustan Times.
The youngsters belonged to Rashtra Swabhimaan Dal (RSD) and Hindu Yuva Vahini (HYV) and were released after submitting a written apology.
Deepak Sharma, a 30-year-old who led the group, justified the move saying: “It was basically ‘Tejomalaya’, a Shiva a temple, which was demolished by Mughal rulers to make the Taj Mahal.”
He went on to add: “We did nothing wrong but apologised in writing because we were told by CISF officials that recital of ‘Shiva Chalisa’ was in violation of the Supreme Court orders. We respect the Supreme Court and had no intention to hurt religious feeling of any sect.”
Sharma said they had filed a PIL in the Supreme Court to find out why Hindus couldn’t ‘recite Shiva Chalisa’ at the Taj, which was owned by the central government'.
This isn’t the first time someone has claimed that Taj Mahal built on an erstwhile Shiva a temple.
In 2014, former BJP UP chief Laxmikant Bajpai had claimed that the Taj Mahal was part of an ancient Shiva a Temple after SP leader Azam Khan had asked for it to be handed over to the Waqf board. He had said: “Azam's dream to offer namaz five times at Taj will never be fulfilled.”
Another senior BJP leader Vinay Katiyar had claimed that the Taj Mahal was a Lord Shiva a temple called 'Tejo Mahal' which was converted into a mausoleum by Mughal emperor Shah Jahan.
However, the claims about the Shiva a temple continued and culture minister Dr Mahesh Sharma had clarified in parliament on December 1, 2015 that the ‘government had not found any evidence which can suggest that Taj Mahal was a Hindu temple of Shiva a’.
Earlier, in a bid to downplay the controversy, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had said the monument was made by the blood and sweat of "Bharat Mata's sons" and its protection was the responsibility of his government
The 17th century marble monument was built by Shah Jahan for his wife Mumtaz Mahal. Both were buried there.
