A Christian BJP leader in Kerala plant to set up a ‘Christian Helpline’ to prevent ‘love jihad’, the supposed attempt to convert Christian girls to Islam.  Renjith Abraham Thomas, a leader of the BJP’s minority religious wing, said he has got widespread support from his community.

He was quoted saying by Hindustan Times, that he has been pledged help by the Hindu Helpline. He plans to recruit volunteers for the Christian Helpline to identify ‘victims’ of ‘love jihad’, and that families would be given counselling.

Thomas said that he had evidence of sleeper cells active in Malappuram and Kasargode districts to 'trap' girls, particularly students of medical and nursing institutes.

Thomas further said: “We are not against anyone. But at the same time, we have to protect the interest of our community. We don’t want export of human bombs from here. If the community is little alert, we can avert such situations.”

Reacting to the incident, CPI (M) leader EP Jayarajan said: “Sangh Parivar is trying desperately to widen its base in the state. But all its attempts failed miserably. This is one such, but people of the state will realise its designs.”

BJP president Amit Shah recently visited Kerala and said that the state’s workers to strive hard to "utilise the space" in the southern state's political arena, saying there was "enough potential" for the saffron party's growth there. In a bid to reach out to the members of the Christian community in Kerala, Shah had met the heads of the Syro Malankara, Syro Malabar and Latin Catholic churches and discussed the issues being faced by them, especially the members of the fishermen community.
