Minutes before union minister Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti's controversial remarks rocked Parliament, prime minister Narendra Modi expressed his disappointment over such comments.

While addressing the BJP's parliamentary party meeting on Tuesday, Modi said it was unfortunate that his message to MPs to exercise restraint in addressing the nation has not sunk in yet, sources said. Without naming anyone, the prime minister said MPs should refrain from statements that could embarrass the party and government.

Later, minister of state for parliamentary affairs Rajiv Pratap Rudy said Jyoti's remarks were unfortunate and that parliamentary affairs minister Venkaiah Naidu had spoken to her after which she had apologised. However, when asked if she was reprimanded at the meeting of the BJP parliamentary party, Rudy said the issue did not come up then. He said Modi had also told the MPs not to indulge "in any activity just for display."

The prime minister has asked the MPs to give their field of interest in sports saying that he had "something in mind," Rudy told reporters. Modi also asked them to pursue the Jan Dhan Yojana.

To a question about the Opposition charge that the PM was absent from Parliament, he said "I dont think that's an issue. Opposition has run out of issues. The PM is hands on and is aware round the clock of what is happening in Parliament," he said.

BJP chief Amit Shah, who was also present at the meeting, asked MPs to enhance the party's membership drive which has a target of ten crore. The party wants every Rajya Sabha MP to adopt a Lok Sabha seat where the BJP has never won to give a push to the party's membership drive, particularly in areas which have been alien to it.

Besides this, Shah spoke of the participation of MPs in reaching out to people in Delhi, where elections are likely in February. Each of the party's 325 MPs has been asked to devote six evenings to holding small meetings in the Capital during the winter session. Of them, 225 have given their proposals and the meetings have already begun, Rudy said.

'Good Governance Day'
Former prime minister Atal Behari Vajpayee's birthday on December 25 would be observed as national 'Good Governance Day', prime minister Narendra Modi said on Tuesday. Modi was addressing party MPs at the meeting of the BJP Parliamentary Party, where BJP President Amit Shah was also present.

"Prime Minister Narendra Modi told the party MPs that the birthday of former Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee would be observed as national 'Good Governance Day' on December 25, where all BJP MPs and government officials will make the day symbolic of good governance," said Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Rajiv Pratap Rudy .
