Don't incarcerate youths on unfounded suspicion, Muslim body tells Centre

JIH's assertion came a day after Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind (JUH), a leading Muslim organisation, met Union home minister Rajnath Singh and apprised him of the community's concerns vis-a-vis several issues, including arrests of youths and alleged moves to strip institutions of their minority status.

Jamaat-e-Islami Hind (JIH), an Islamic body known for upholding secular, plural and democratic principles, has urged the BJP-led central government to withdraw charges and immediately release all those Muslim youths who have been arrested without any solid evidence and incarcerated merely on suspicion.

Viewing the sudden blanket arrests beginning just before the Republic Day with scepticism, the JIH's acting president Nusrat Ali reminded the government that both Prime Minister Modi and Union home minister Rajnath Singh had unequivocally denied IS having any existence in India and that Indian Muslims would never fall a prey to it.

"JIH condemns radicalisation whether by ISIS (IS) or by the Hindutva senas in Western Uttar Pradesh. However, a few stray individuals cannot be representative of an entire community and it is wrong to portray only Muslims as sympathetic or prone to carrying out terrorist activities," said Nusrat Ali.

"Muslim youths are being picked up for merely being curious and surfing the Internet. Many others, non-Muslims also do it but they are not picked up. Why?" questioned JIH general secretary, Dr Mohammad Salim Engineer.

All the Muslim organisations in India have denounced Islamic State and described it as an anti-Islamic terrorist organisation that was propped up for ulterior motives by the West. These organisations, including JIH, are making their best efforts to educate youth about the dangers of IS and they would never fall a prey to it, asserted Dr Engineer while speaking to the dna.

The JIH also expressed serious concern at the government's alleged design to strip organisations like Aligarh Muslim University of their minority status.

Calling it a deliberate attack on the constitutional rights given to the minorities, the JIH urged the government to correct its stand and not create an unnecessary dispute by attempting to snatch AMU from the community.

The JIH said that on its part it has suggested the finance ministry to increase allocation to the social sector and wants the government to spend 6% of the GDP on education and 3% on healthcare, the two fields that have become out of common man's reach. It also asked government to introduce interest free mode of finance for farm credit to bring out farming sector from distress.
