The doctors had gone on a strike on Saturday, soon after two doctors were assaulted by relatives of a patient who died during treatment on Saturday morning. The Police have registered a case against five people and arrested four of them but the doctors have not budged saying they will not call off the strike until all of their demands are met.
The incident took place in the morning when Zaida Sanaullah Sheikh (45), a resident of Mumbra who was being treated for a gall bladder ailment, died.
Her family members alleged that it was due to negligence on the doctors' part and beat up Dr Atish Parikh and a woman doctor who were on duty, a police official said. Dr Parikh suffered a facial fracture in the assault.
A nurse was also allegedly manhandled, and the relative of another patient, who rushed to help the doctors, was beaten up.
They also allegedly ransacked the ward. CCTV footage of the incident went viral on social media.
Police arrested five members of Sheikh's family, including a woman, for the alleged assault.
"We have arrested four persons — Mohammed Shaikh, Sony Sanaullah, Rihan Sanaullah and Samila Sanaullah," said Senior Police inspector Shirish Gaikwad of JJ Marg police station.
After the incident, the hospital realised that the emergency alarm system – proposed two years ago and meant to alert security personnel – has not been installed. Resident doctors at the hospital announced a day-long strike demanding implementation of the security system.
The Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors (MARD) alleged that despite repeated requests, there was no adequate security at the hospital.
MARD chief Dr Sarang Donarkar, in a letter to the Dean of J J Hospital, alleged that the number of security guards has been reduced to half.
Donarkar said on Saturday that they would not call off the strike until their demands are met.
"We will call off the strike only when we see the implementation of security system on the ground rather than just on paper. We had a meeting today with the Dean and demanded to assign one security guard in every ward of the hospital. Unless our demand is fulfilled, we won't work," Dr Sarang Donarkar, Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors (MARD) president, said.
"The authority is only giving us assurance that they will soon increase the security force but they need some time to complete paper work and get permission to increase the number of guards," he said.
