A thief, who targeted his victims in the afternoon, was nabbed by Fatahpura residents while he tried to rob the house of a doctor. Irfan alias Salim alias Raju Shaikh was caught by the residents and handed over to police on Sunday afternoon.

During interrogation he told the cops that he used to rob houses during the festival season and specifically in the afternoon. On Sunday afternoon, Shaikh was taking his rounds on a scooter, when he came across Vallabh flats in Fatahpura. There he came across the locked house of Dr Ajit Shah. He broke the lock and entered the house.
Meanwhile, Shah who had gone out for some work returned and saw that the lock of his house was broken. Shah then immediately locked the door from outside and shouted for help. Meanwhile, Shaikh took a saree from the house and tied it to the balcony to escape. But as he reached the ground floor he was caught by the residents.
"We got a call from the residents and when we reached there Shaikh was handed over to us," said JB Gadhvi, police inspector, Ellisbridge police station. "Shaikh chose his targets according to the community members residing there and their festivals. He had broken into several houses in Shaherkotda, Kalupur and Danilimda. In Ellisbridge he confessed to breaking-into 7 houses and stealing goods worth more then Rs30 lakh," Gadhvi said.
Gadhvi said that in rest of the areas Shaikh has admitted to 22 thefts.
Shaikh, who is from Hubli, used to roam around on his scooter with his tools of trade.
Gadhvi said that in the particularly locality where Shaikh was nabbed the incidence of robbery in the afternoon had registered a sharp rise.
He said the arrest of Shaikh may help solve many such cases. The police are now working to recover the things allegedly stolen by Shaikh.
