West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee took a jibe at the Central government over the National Register of Citizens (NRC) issue through a poem penned by her. Written in three languages, the poem was posted on her Facebook page on Monday.

Titled ‘Porichoi’ in Bangla, ‘Parichay’ in Hindi and ‘Identity’ in English, the two-page poem opens with people being asked about what their surname, father’s name, language and faith and what they eat. If they are unable to answer those they were not wanted in the world.

She wrote about how people had been tagged ‘traitors’ if they are unable to prove their identity and residence. In the third paragraph referring to the Centre’s scheme Gobar-dhan (galvanising organic bio-agro resources) as ‘Govardhan’ Mamata wrote if one didn’t have an account in the govardhan account then he or she would be tagged as an infiltrator.

The poem also read that if people didn’t have their Aadhaar linked with their phones and didn’t listen to ‘Mann Ki Baat’, then those persons would be called as terrorists.

She also punned on the word ‘Shashok’ or ruler and wrote ‘Shashok’ or exploiter and how they used agencies to intimidate others.

State BJP leaders said Mamata was indulging in anti-people policies. “Chances are that someone else has written the poem for her. It is also true that when noted poet like Sankha Ghosh writes something against the state, these leaders get apprehensive. She is now taking up anti-people policies. People will not forgive her. They will give her a fitting reply,” said state BJP president Dilip Ghosh.

At 8.30 pm, five hours after it had been posted, the Bengali version has had 1200 shares and 307 comments.
