The attack on the Samba military station has confirmed the apprehensions of the army intelligence that militants from across the border have changed their game plan in an attempt to increase the geographical spread of their targets.

The focus has now shifted from north of Pir Panjal to the south.

According to a senior military intelligence official, a new trend has emerged in the past two months, in which terrorists crossed the Line of Control and moved towards the Jammu region, which has not witnessed any terrorist attack in the past several years.

In 2002, as many as 33 persons were killed in a terrorist attack on an army camp in Kaluchak in Jammu. In the same year, Raghunath temple at the heart of Jammu city was also targeted by militants.

According to sources, about 30 militants have sneaked into the Jammu region in the past two months.

So far, militants have made more than 205 infiltration attempts on the Line of Control, in which 75 terrorists successfully sneaked into India. Last year, 200 militants tried to infiltrate into India and 100 of them succeeded.

“Earlier, militants would cross the LoC in Poonch, Rajauri and Mendhar sectors, while some of them crossed the Pir Panjal range to enter the Valley because any successful strike in the Valley would give them maximum attention.

However in the recent past, some Pakistan-based terrorists have infiltrated deep into Jammu. Their aim is to widen the geographical scope of terrorism,”a senior army officer said.

In August, a border action team comprising militants and Pakistan army personnel carried out a deadly strike in Poonch killing five Indian jawans. Earlier in January, a similar attack took place in Mendhar sector, wherein two Indian soldiers were beheaded.

Describing the new strategy of the militants, army sources said that since the army’s counter-insurgency measures along the LoC and other sensitive areas of north Kashmir like Kupwara and Baramula have prevented militants from carrying out any strike, they have now shifted their focus to the Jammu sector.
