1. Dalit Scholar's Suicide: VC of University of Hyderabad Appa Rao Podile goes on indefinite leave
Appa Rao Podile, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Hyderabad has gone on indefinite leave. Podile has been under fire for a while for his role in Dalit scholar Rohith Vemula’s suspension and his subsequent suicide. A note on their official website said: "The Vice-Chancellor will be on leave. In the absence of the Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Vipin Srivastava, the Seniormost Professor, shall perform the duties of the Vice-Chancellor w.e.f. 24-01-2016 (F.N.). Read more here.

5. Major earthquake of 7.3 magnitude hits south Alaska, tremors felt in Anchorage
A major earthquake hit southern Alaska early on Sunday, the US Geological Survey said, setting off tremors felt more than 170 miles (280 km) away in the state's biggest city Anchorage.
