1) Suicide bid or not? Conflicting reports on Indrani Mukerjea's health leads to confusion

Confusion prevailed on Saturday when two contradictory medical investigation reports emerged after Sheena Bora murder case accused allegedly overdosed on a drug inside the jail. The Kalina Forensic Science Laboratory (KFSL) report, submitted to the Maharashtra government, concluded that Indrani's blood, urine and stomach wash tested negative for any poisonous substance. Dr TP Lahane, Dean of J J Hospital, however, claimed that Indrani's urine sample sent to the Hinduja hospital tested positive for psychoactive drugs. Read More

2) Rajasthan: Dalit student thrashed for touching mid-day meal plates

In a shocking incident, a lower caste Dalit student of a government school in Jodhpur city Rajasthan was beaten up by his teacher for touching plates being used to serve mid-day meal on Thursday. Although, India banned caste-based discrimination in 1955, its 170 million Dalits continue to face prejudice in every sector from education to employment, because of their traditional occupations such as street sweeping and grave digging. 4) Nepal turns to UN over 'obstruction'' of trade point with India

Nepal has turned to the UN over alleged obstruction of a key border trade point with India that has resulted in acute shortage of essential goods as it appealed to the international community to ensure that land- locked countries' freedom of transit is not curtailed. Deputy Prime Minister Prakash Man Singh, who led Nepal's delegation to the UN General Assembly, held talks with UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon during which the issue of "India's blockade" on the border also figured, sources close to Singh told PTI. 5) Maharashtra government comes up with plan to stop radicalisation of disgruntled Muslim youth

A proposal named 'De-radicalisation of Youth and Communal Amity' is in the works to bring them to the mainstream. This, after the government has realised that there is a direct link between growing radicalisation and a sense of alienation among the youth of the minority community.  A government resolution, listing various proposals, is expected to be out in a fortnight. Among other things, it calls for special allocation of funds to Muslim-dominated areas for better implementation of various schemes, modernisation of madrasas and counselling to those lodged in jails under charges of terrorism to help them overcome their past.
