An Intelligence Bureau officer was thrashed by the activists of Popular Front of India, an organisation under scanner, after he was spotted recording their activities during a protest.

Much to the chagrin of the IB, the incident took place in Lutyens' Delhi near Vithalbhai Patel House at Rafi Marg, a stone's throw away from the Bureau's headquarters in North Block. The sleuth, who was not identified, works at the headquarter in the national capital and was given the duty of gathering information about the activities of PFI.

"While he was taking pictures as well as tracking the movements of PFI men during a congregation, he was waylaid by six to seven PFI men and beaten up. Thereafter, his cameras, recorders and phone were snatched," said sources in intelligence and security agencies.

The PFI burst into the limelight in 2010 after its involvement in the chopping of a hand of a professor in Kerala in 2010 for allegedly insulting the prophet. The IB sleuth was rescued after a passerby called the police, saying a man being was bashed up by half a dozen people. The cops rushed to the scene and to their surprise, they found that he was from the IB.
The police rounded up the attackers and recovered the officer's belongings. They were about to register a case but top IB officers directed them not to have any written record of the incident and ensure that the matter was never pursued. The detained PFI men were allowed to leave after some time.

After much deliberations, it was later found that the IB sleuth first spotted by the PFI's intelligence unit spotters and then their hit team attacked the IB sleuth. Sources said that unlike any other organisations, PFI has its own intelligence unit, comprising highly intelligent young agents with a strong academic background.

"These well-trained spies have the expertise in decoding communications, human, financial and technical intelligence. Even few of them are spotters who can easily identify cops, IB sleuths and government officials," said a source adding that they hide under the wrap of corporate jobs.

Their intelligence wing is highly decentralized and extremely invisible. They are completely paperless and no written record has ever been recovered from the arrested miscreants of PFI. The PFI operates its intelligence wing in "disjoint manner" under the guise of non-government organizations, trust and private limited companies.

Sources also stated that PFI has started engaging retired government officials in their intelligence unit making it extremely tough for IB to decode the PFI activities.
