1) IT dept finds discrepancies in AAP's donation records, asks EC to de-register the party

The Income Tax department has claimed to have found that the audit reports prepared by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) for donations amounting to about Rs 27 crore have discrepancies and are incorrect.

In a report submitted to the Election Commission, the department, which has been investigating the donations list of the party for the last over an year, has said that the records of donations made to the AAP during 2013-14 and 2014-15 had "factual discrepancies" and did not match with the actual funds received by it from various donors. Sanjeev Sanyal, former global strategist and Managing Director of Deutshe Bank, was on Friday appointed as Principal Economic Adviser.

The Appointments Committee of Cabinet has approved Sanyal's appointment for three years on contract basis, an order issued by Personnel Minister said. Sanyal will work under the Department of Economic Affairs. Read more...

3) Goa Elections 2017: BJP, Congress, AAP and new three-party alliance set to do battle for 40-state Assembly

After an acrimonious campaign, Goa is all set for the Assembly polls which will witness a contest among ruling BJP, opposition Congress, new entrant AAP and the three-party alliance forged by MGP, GSM and Shiv Sena. Over 11 lakh voters in Goa are eligible to exercise their right to franchise to elect members for the 40-seat state Assembly. Voting across 1,642 polling booths in the state would begin tomorrow at 7 AM and culminate at 5 PM. The Chief Electoral Officer, working under the guidance of Election Commission of India (ECI), has deployed trained staff to conduct polling which would be provided security cover jointly by state police and paramilitary forces.

The fate of five former chief ministers and present CM Laxmikant Parsekar will be decided in the election which is being contested by 250 candidates--131 in South Goa and 119 in North Goa. The counting of votes will be held on March 11. Read more...

4) Post-Godhra riots: Gandhinagar court acquits 28 accused

All 28 accused in a post-Godhra riots case have been acquitted by a Gandhinagar court which cited lack of substantial evidence against them. Those who have been acquitted by the court include present chairman of the Kalol Nagrik Sahkari Bank, Govind Patel. All the accused were already on bail since long.

The 28 persons were accused of arson, rioting and damaging property of minority community at Paliyad village in Kalol taluka of Gandhinagar district on February 28, 2002, a day after the train burning incident at Godhra railway station. Read more...

5) H-1B visa muddle: Indian IT firms to meet Trump officials, to highlight contribution to US economy

Industry body Nasscom will take a delegation of senior executives to Washington DC later this month to reach out to the new US administration as well as senators on concerns around clampdown on visas and flow of skilled manpower between the two nations.

"Nasscom plans to visit Washington between February 22 and 24. We are looking at meeting representatives in the new Trump administration as well as engage with Senators and Congressmen," said Nasscom President, R Chandrashekhar. Read more...
