Even after receiving 99.40 per cent in Secondary School Certificate (SSC) examination this year, Rasika Salgaonkar, a resident of Nallasopara, does not know whether she will be able to complete her further studies.

Rasika, a student of KMPD School in Nallasopara, came first in Vasai taluka. She now aims to make a career in architecture. But what may obstruct her from achieving her dreams is the acute financial problem her family faces.

Rasika, who lives with her elder sister, lost her father, Tarang Salgaonkar, two years ago.

Now, the family's sole bread earner is her mother, Meenashi Salgaonkar, who works in a local tiffin service.

The family's financial condition is so bad that the mother has to some times bring home the leftovers from the tiffin service in order to provide dinner to her daughters.

At times, her employer too pitches in by donating stationary or other things.

On their own, Rasika's family has brought down their expenses by as much as possible. So much so that they use minimal electricity to keep the monthly bill within their budget.

Speaking about her struggle, Rasika, said, "I had aimed for 98 per cent and actually succeeded in scoring 99.40 per cent. This was indeed a pleasant surprise."

She said she had decided to be an architect when she was in class 9. "I am good in maths and for the past few years, I have been planning my studies accordingly," said Rasika.

What makes her success remarkable is that she scored high without going to any coaching class. She could not afford private lessons and made best of the lectures in school.

Talking about the family's financial problems, Rasika's mother, said, "With my limited means, I managed to help her complete her SSC. But we now need financial help to her complete her future studies. We have appealed to many people and are hopeful that somebody will come forward to help us. Whoever comes to congratulate her, we tell them about our financial plight."
