There is an interesting contest between both senior leaders of BJP and Congress.
This is a fight between Jiji and Bhai Sahab in the Lake City Udaipur after 33 years. Senior Congress leader and former minister Girija Vyas is in the fray with a resolution to repeat history made in 1985. While senior BJP leader and Home Minister Gulab Chand Kataria is eyeing fourth consecutive win.
There is an interesting contest between both senior leaders of BJP and Congress. Development of the city is the major issue that the two are fighting for. Kataria is seeking votes in the name to develop Udaipur as a smart city while Vyas is saying that there has been no development.
Kataria is an RSS background leader and state home minister and he is the face of BJP in Mewar. His major role is to establish BJP in the tribal area. While Vyas is also a senior Congress leader in Mewar and the party has introduced Vyas against Kataria so that he cannot get out of his constituency. Congress has been succeeded in its strategy so far.
Kataria is famous as Bhai Sahab in Udaipur, whereas people lovingly call Girija Vyas Jiji. After 33 years, Congress has made Vyas a candidate from Udaipur seat. She had defeated Kataria in the 1985 Assembly elections by nearly 27,000 votes. After this, Vyas did not contest assembly elections from Udaipur. This time the Congress has put Vyas against Kataria making the contest interesting. The Jain and Brahmin community have the highest number of voters in Udaipur. Kataria represents Jain community, while Vyas is a Brahmin.
However, entire Congress organisation is not united in Udaipur as one faction is not with party candidate. While Kataria is facing rebellion from people close to him.
RSS background and senior workers of BJP have opened a front against Kataria and formed Bhairon Singh Shekhawat Munch. Former Assembly speaker Shantilal Chaplot, Mangilal Joshi, Dalpat Surana, Kiran Chand Lasod and other discontented BJP leaders have united under this Munch. They have fielded Dalpat as a candidate of Janta Sena against Kataria. Vallabhhanagara MLA Randhir Singh Bhindar is also biggest opponent of Kataria and Janta Sena is his party. Janta Sena is supporting Shekhawat Munch. This can be a problem for Kataria who was elected MLA from Udaipur for the first time in 1970. In 1989, he was elected to Lok Sabha for two years and became a minister in Rajasthan government in 1993 for the first time. After that, he has been in the ministerial post in every BJP government in Rajasthan. Kataria has been elected MLA from Udaipur five times and has been MLA for past 15 years. Vyas became MLA by defeating Katria from Udaipur for the first time in 1985. She won Lok Sabha election in 1991.
