Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi Palaniswami, who had won a trust vote in the state Assembly on February 18, may have to win another vote in the Assembly to save his government with the DMK seeking to move a no-confidence motion against Speaker P Dhanapal.

Upping the ante against the AIADMK government, leader of the Opposition and DMK Working President MK Stalin told reporters at the Fort St George on Tuesday that his party has given a letter to the Assembly Secretary for bringing a no-confidence motion against the Speaker. He said that a copy of the letter was submitted to the Speaker as well.

“When the trust motion was moved in the Assembly on February 18, the Speaker acted with ulterior motives,” said Stalin, adding that as per the Assembly rules, the motion should be taken up within 15 days.

The DMK, which has 88 MLAs, couldn’t vote in the trust vote after its members were evicted from the Assembly for staging a sit-in.

Stalin had then rushed to meet Governor Vidyasagar Rao to complain against the Speaker and demand nullifying of the vote. The party has announced a statewide hunger strike on Wednesday to condemn the ‘illegal’ trust vote. He is also meeting President Pranab Mukherjee on Thursday.

Interestingly, Stalin’s counsel R Shanmugasundaram on Tuesday alleged in the Madras High Court that the Speaker and Assembly Secretary are attempting to tamper with the records of the February 18 House proceedings.

The Bench will hear the case on Wednesday.

Palaniswami, who won the trust vote by a margin of 122-11, has to keep his flock together to defeat the DMK’s no-confidence motion against the Speaker. AIADMK legislators who voted in favour of Palaniswami are facing the wrath of the local party cadre and the public and are provided with police security.
